The Scorpion and The Frog
A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "Because if I do, I will die too."
The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?" Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."
Very recently (Last week feels like a day ago) I decided to change my Senior Film. The choice to do so has been a very difficult one, but I recognized I was not happy with the film I was doing. Working on Pyro Pup was a great experience, but slowly I realized it was not what I wanted to leave SCAD with.
I felt that I needed to try something that was a bit different, open up my skill set a bit, and experiment with something I really wanted to do. Using the fable of " The Scorpion and the Frog" I am going to a Experimental film. I am extremely excited about this and have been doing animation test and character designs, as well as thumbnailing shots, and researching great animated filmmakers and experimental animators.
The point of this film, or rather, what I am trying to experiment with is the use of value, and composition, to tell story. I am generally trying to get a horror/macabre type feel with this film so watching classic horror films has been pretty fun ( recently watched Psycho (1960)).
So I hope you all wish me luck in my endeavors! And I hope you are as excited as I!
Trying to figure out the frog. Who is He. How will he be drawn and animated? |

Layouts for Pyro Pup
So I recently got the book The Noble Approach by Tod Polson. I have been trying to not only apply the teaching of Maurice Noble to my film but to my other artwork as well. Here are some studies I did based off the readings about composition and value in layouts:
So in conclusion I feel The Noble Approach is a spectacular read, and I recommend every animation artist have a chance to read it ( and own it!! )
The very top is the animatic version of shot 1, The second is final version, and the final two were concepts playing with composition. |

Starting my last year in two weeks
So in two weeks I'll be starting my last year at SCAD.
I'm have so many emotions bursting in my brain right now. But on the outside I'm as cool as a cucumber. (am I going crazy? I think I'm dying )
So I have been working to make my Senior Film Pitch Packet, as good as possible in the next couple of weeks. But on my down time I've been trying to work on my website as well as making little Illustrations and Animations on the side.
Here are a couple of images I had from some ideas I can't really explain XD

Character Exercises: Monday Tuesday
I started doing some exercises the other day before doing work. I tried opening a dictionary picking a random word and drawing what I first think of.
STRENGTH
HOPPER
Today I did some redesigning for a character I found in one of my older sketchbooks.
I was thinking about animating this guy if I get time..but back to work in the mean time!

WEBSITE Update: Sketchbook
So I updated my website!
I divided my Character Design Tab into two subsections: Character Development and Sketchbook. I wanted to incorporate things in my sketchbook I really enjoyed, as well as my character design flatbook. Here are some of the things I included (things that may already be posted here on the blog :) )

4 Goldfish Sketches!
A few weeks ago, (sometime right before Father's Day) I got goldfish! I got two Goldfish and one Black Moor. And of course I couldn't resist sketching them!
The white and gold one is named Tito Friday!
The completely gold Goldfish is Finn Mercury
And the Black Moor is named Pluto.
They are adorable, and I love 'em! Friday and Mercury are always so frantic, but Pluto never runs away from the food XD. But they all love each other. They seem to be doing fine floating together.

Pyro Pup: Dog Designs
Finished up my screenplay this morning, and ready to hit some storyboards on it!
But Before that I'll lay down some more dog character designs I did for Pyro Pup
But Before that I'll lay down some more dog character designs I did for Pyro Pup
Some are similar, being shorter, or triangle nosed. The initial character design I had for him received critiques saying he was too pig like (oops XD) But in an effort to keep his adorableness I have dived into messing with proportion and shape.
Any thoughts?

Pyro Pup: a film about a "Hot" dog
This September I am to officially start production on my senior film Pyro Pup! Pyro Pup is about a puppy on fire trying to find a friend in a world where his mere presence would cause harm. This passed Spring Quarter (March- June) I started Concept Development for the film. Below is the Pitch Packet for it (excluding the storyboards/slightly a secret right now)
Take a look!
Pyro Pup's design is still under development. This design was chosen during the story board phase!
The story is going through a few changes, but not too many.
One of my big big BIG inspirations is John Hubley's Rooty Toot Toot 1952
Maurice Noble is a huge part of my Layout Inspiration. (The Noble Approach comes out this October! I pre-ordered !!)
Non Objective painting as well as Abstract Painting. I adore Picasso's "Man Leaning on Table" 1916 (it reminds me of a cityscape!
Puppies......because puppies
Some designs developed for Pyro's look
The story includes a Homeless man, a Dog Owner, and a few other dogs
Hope you like what I have so far
And now, Fire tests
So the fire is pretty simple. I'm still working out some problems with it but so far it's been exciting getting this all together!
I'll be posting some more designs and tests of the nature soon! Stay tuned :)

Banjo Pig Banjo
Summer Break is finally here! This break means more art for my SENIOR FILM (woooot)
But for now I have a great discovery!!
....well less a discovery but more, a recommendation? I guess...
Anyway Jantze, a brilliant professor of mine, referred me to this awesome site : Dueling Banjo Pigs
where it's nothing but (you guessed it ) Pigs playing banjos, by awesome artist! Being a little prone to drawing pigs myself I couldn't shake the opportunity to draw a pig playing a banjo...I mean come on!

So I drew this guy
and he has a little companion!
Here are some of the sketches before the illustration:
I have also made a Pinterest Account Head over and follow me! I've mostly been pinning inspiration for my film, but I'm bound to jump into other even more awesome things!
